Dr. Christos Kyrkou is a Research Lecturer at the KIOS Research & Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus. He has worked as a Research Assistant at KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus from 2010-2014, as a Research Associate from 2014-2020, and as a Senior Research Associate from 2020-2021. He received the B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering in 2008 from the University of Cyprus where he graduated top of his class and received the award for best thesis in computer engineering. In 2010 after receiving a full scholarship for postgraduate studies, he obtained the M.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering. He received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Cyprus in 2014. He is an author/co-author of more than 40 scientific publications in international peer reviewed conferences and journals. He has worked in European and nationally funded projects related to visual monitoring with UAVs, smart camera networks, and hardware acceleration of pattern recognition algorithms, and is currently leading the research efforts of KIOS CoE for the development of robust visual AI for autonomous vehicles under the H2020 project CARAMEL. In 2011 he co-founded ACC Innovations Ltd and up to December 2017 he served as Director of Technology and Operations contributing to funded proposals by the Cyprus Government and the development of embedded firmware for robotics platforms. In 2017 he graduated from the 9-month Self-Driving Car Engineering program by UDACITY (Partnered by Mercedes-Benz, Ubet ATG, and NVIDiA). He has also received individual GPU Grants by NVIDIA in support of his research. His research interests lie in the areas of Computer Vision and Deep Learning in general, and embedded vision, visual object detection, and robotic perception, in particular, with emphasis on real-time performance.
